The Superjet prototype made its first flight with the domestically produced PD-8 engines. It took place in Komsomolsk-on-Amur and marked the start of flight tests of the PD-8 as part of the Superjet.
A large cooperation of manufacturers under the guidance of Yakovlev company included in United Aircraft Corporation performs the Superjet import substitution program as part of Rostec State Corporation. The new Russian powerplants were created by United Engine Corporation team.
“Today’s flight validates our engineering design and high availability of the aircraft. The project is implemented in a very short time by standards of international aircraft engineering. After 2022, the Superjet has to be, in fact, completely rebuilt. Moreover, engine is one of the key components of the import substitution program,” said Sergey Chemezov, CEO of Rosteс State Corporation.
The PD-8 engine with the thrust of 8 tons for the Superjet passenger airplane and the Be-200 amphibious aircraft uses new Russian materials and advanced technology. Superject import substitution activities imply substitution of about 40 import systems and equipment, including the engine, avionics, landing gear, auxiliary propulsion system, integrated flight control system, power supply, air conditioning and fire protection systems, etc. The aircraft has also received a domestically produced body in which changes were made to simplify aircraft production and servicing.
