Rostec to Phase Out the Imports of Fiber Optics Feedstock

Shvabe holding, Rostec State Corporation, is going to take part in the Russian quartz tube and rod production project. These tubes and rods are used for fabrication of preforms from which optical fibers are extruded. Optical fibers are used in telecommunications, digital video broadcasting and mobile networks for fast and safe transmission of large data volumes. As of today, production of quartz materials for fiber optics has not been launched.

Optical fibers have a set of advantages over copper wire cables. The advantages include low weight and dimensions, easy installation, electromagnetic interference immunity, wider bandwidth. All these make fiber optics indispensable for data transmission cabling of various purpose. For example, in equipment for real-time multimedia traffic and control command transfer, telecontrol and supervisory control.

“This year, engineers of our Shvabe optical-electronic holding in cooperation with Skolkovo and Povolzhskiy State University of Telecommunications and Informatics personnel developed a new product – optical fiber for data transmission via cable networks in corrosive environment. The new material may be used to furnish aircraft, spacecraft, railway locomotives, passenger and freight trains and subway lines with high-speed data transmission systems. At the same time, there is a shortage of raw materials – quartz tubes and rods for fabrication of optical fiber preforms in the amounts required at the national level. Our specialized companies will address this issue in the nearest future,” said Oleg Evtushenko, Rostec’s Executive Director.
