The Research and Development Institute for Engine Technology and Industrial Engineering (NIID, branch of United Engine Corporation, Rostec) has developed a surface hardening method for gas turbine engine compressor blades. This will allow to increase the time between overhauls of power units by 1.5 to 2 times.

NIID personnel have been working on the project during two years. Now, the new method is tested on AI-222-25 process engine.

“The new method will allow to increase the hardening depth by almost 2.5 times and to improve the fatigue endurance limit of the blades by more than 18%. As for life performance, this helps to extend the time between overhauls of the engine by about 1.5 to 2 times,” said Sergey Pavlinich, Director of NIID – UEC branch.

NIID won a silver medal for this development at the Archimedes 2023 International Salon of Inventions and Innovative Technologies and a special award of the World Invention Intellectual Property Associations (WIIPA).

It has been reported earlier that Rostec’s United Engine Corporation won the highest award of the Archimedes 2023 International Salon of Inventions and Innovative Technologies – Grand Prix “Golden Archimedes”. The prize has been awarded for a set of advanced patented innovative solutions in all main engine building segments.
