The Federal Service for Supervision in Healthcare has registered the first Russian HIFU therapy system – a joint development of Shvabe holding and Peter the Great St.Petersburg Polytechnic University. The system enables tumor detection and removal without surgery. Commercial production of the equipment is to be started early in 2024.

HIFU therapy is non-invasive treatment using high intensity focused ultrasonic waves. This method is recognized by the modern medical science as one of the most safe and effective methods of fight against cancer. DIATER-M acts on early malignant and benign tumors. It requires no anesthesia or potent drug administration and features high accuracy of operations. Ultrasound-guided HIFU therapy can be carried out even when a patient has various implants and surgical hardware.

“Pre-clinical tests of HIFU system were carried out at Petrov National Medicine Research Center of Oncology and Pavlov University. The registration certificate issued by the Federal Service for Supervision in Healthcare enabled the system to be used in medical practice. The next step is purely technical – clinical testing at Russian medical facilities. We plan to complete the tests by the end of 2023 in order to launch batch production of the system,” said Oleg Evtushenko, Executive Director of Rostec.
